One of the bigger developments in the NFL this week was the announcement that former number one overall pick Bryce Young has been demoted. Benched. In is the red rifle. Andy Dalton, the 36 year old, will be the new starting quarterback for the Carolina Panthers as they visit the Las Vegas Raiders. Raiders off that big win in Baltimore where they trailed by 10 in the fourth quarter. This line now -5.5 to the Raiders and 41 is your over/under.

So kind of funny that the line was 7. Bryce Young news surfaces, and the line goes to 5.5. Now, I’m not a Bryce Young fan. I kind of anticipated he’d struggle in the NFL. But Dalton has been awful, awful. Not that 36 is super old, but he hasn’t been good in the NFL in several years. When he’s played, he’s had a QBR around 50. So I don’t know how the Panthers stay close here.

Now, we talk about situational handicapping a lot. It’s not the best spot to bet the Raiders, a team off a big win, but it’s the home opener, some confidence. I think it does catapult them a little bit. And there’s a lot of weapons with this Las Vegas team and the Carolina issues go well beyond just the quarterback. That roster is subpar to say the least. So I’m going to lay the points with the Raiders. I think they get a little bit of a lift from the home crowd. And the new head coach in Carolina, he’s known as a QB whisperer has salvaged the careers of Geno Smith, Baker Mayfield, I think he’s got some work to do here with Andy Dalton.
