Beginner’s Guide To Biking

Biking is a great way to get outside and stay active. Most learned how to ride a bike as a kid, but there is a lot more that goes into it when taking up the activity as an adult. Whether it is the equipment, clothing, or nutrition, it is important to know these basics. Here is everything you need to know before you head out for your first long bike ride.

Get The Right Bike For You

When it comes to getting the right bike, comfort is most important. The best way to get a bike that is comfortable for you is to go to a local shop. Even if you know your size, buying a bike in person with the help of employees will go a long way towards picking the right bike for you. It will also give you a familiar place to return to when you have some questions or a problem comes up.

Whether you are using your bike to commute or ride off-road, you will be guided in the right direction at a local bike shop.

Dress Right

For safety reasons, you’re going to want to get a good helmet. Whether your state requires wearing one or not, you should have one if you are trying to turn this into a serious hobby, especially if you are going to be riding on the side of the road.

Some other important items include biking shorts, a biking jersey, and some biking gloves for the winter. A waterproof cycling jacket is also very helpful if you are planning on riding in inclement weather.

Accessories

To start off, get some bike lights. Even if you don’t plan on riding at night, you never know when a ride will go longer than expected. A lot of places require them by law, but you’ll want to be as visible as possible for safety reasons.

The other absolutely essential item is a good bike lock. Especially if you are using your bike to travel to different destinations, you want to prevent your bike from being stolen. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Bring Water And A Snack

Many people bring snacks and water with them to have during their workout; biking should be no different. A holster to hold your water bottle could be very useful. Something like a granola bar that can fit in your pocket is another good item to bring on your rides, especially if you are going for multiple hours.

Know How To Fix A Puncture

You don’t want to get stranded because you have a puncture, so learning how to fix one and having the proper materials with you is essential. There are plenty of easy online tutorials online. A puncture could happen at any time, so it is best to be prepared.
