Best Tequila Brands You Have Never Heard Of

Everyone knows about Don Julio and Patron, but what are the best tequila brands that you might have never heard of? Whether you are hammering down shots with your friends or sipping on a margarita at dinner, we have compiled a list of tequila brands for you to try out.

Grand Mayan

Grand Mayan produces two types of tequila: ultra aged and silver. It is known as one of the best tequila brands to mix in a margarita. The minimum three-year ultra aged tequila is dark in color and comes in a beautiful hand painted talavera bottle. It has a sweet aroma of nuts and is very smooth tasting. The Grand Mayan 3D Silver gives a fresh agave aroma and hints of citrus fruits with mint. It is also sold in handmade decanters that portray the ancient history and deep traditions of Mexico.

Herradura

Herradura is one of the best tasting tequilas in the world. The brand was founded in 1870 by Felix Lopez and boasts the last tequila-producing hacienda on the planet. In 2007, Herradura was bought by Brown-Forman the same year it was named Best Distillery by Wine Enthusiast Magazine. (Brown-Forman also owns many other alcohol brands like Jack Daniels and Woodford Reserve.)

Herradura produces a wide variation of tequilas from silver, reposado, anejo and more. It is barrel-aged from 45 days to 49 months in American White Oak barrels to optimize flavor notes. Herradura invented the reposado tequila category in 1974 and consistently sets the industry standard.

Casa Noble

If you are looking for something more top shelf to try out, Casa Noble is a great choice. Made in the blue weber agave fields of Jalisco, Mexico, it is triple distilled before it hits the shelves. The brand offers three different variations: blanco, reposado and anejo. Each bottle is individually numbered and signed by the founder, Pepe Hermosillo. The Single Barrel Extra Anejo Tequila bottle is widely regarded as one of the best on the market.

Casa Dragones

If you prefer to slowly sip your tequila, Casa Dragones is the perfect fit for you. The small-batch producer dedicates themselves to providing sipping tequilas. They offer enthusiasts three different 100 percent blue agave tequilas. Casa Dragones Barrel Blend is aged in French Oak and American Oak barrels that combine for a smooth taste of macadamia, nutmeg and blackberry. Casa Dragones Joven is a master blend of silver and extra-aged tequila. The soft and smooth taste features hints of vanilla and spiced undertones. Casa Dragones Blanco has a crisp, light finish with hints of almonds and bright aftertaste.

Tesla Tequila

An unexpected brand has tapped into the tequila market that you may not have heard about. The electric vehicle company, Tesla, released their version of the distilled beverage in November 2020. The French Oak barrel-aged tequila features a dry fruit and light vanilla nose with a cinnamon pepper finish. According to their website, each bottle costs $250 but has been sold out recently. However, the tequila can also be bought from resellers for a markup charge. The bottle comes in a lightning bolt shape and is classified as sipping tequila.
